The Mound Westonka High School boys varsity tennis team had a conference match against the Hutchinson Tigers on April 26. With temperatures hovering in the 40s, the match was a grind for players and spectators.
The White Hawks and the Tigers battled at every level of the match. Five of the matches went to three sets to determine the victor. Victorious for the White Hawks was seventh-grader Jack Linder at four singles. Linder gave up the first set, 1-6, but came back to rally in the second and third sets, overtaking his opponent 6-3, 6-4.
Also winning for the White Hawks was the first doubles team of senior captain Samuel Abegglen and sophomore Torsten Lee. Abegglen and Lee split the first and second sets with the Tigers, 6-3, 2-6, but came back big in the third, blowing the Tigers away 6-0.
The second doubles duo of seventh-grader Alex Brown and senior captain Jack Reinhardt lost the first set, 3-6, but rallied in the second set to win 7-6 in a tiebreaker. Down 4-5 in the third set, Reinhardt and Brown came back from match point to win the next three games and snag the third set away from the Tigers, 7-5.
Hutchinson proved to have a slight edge over the White Hawks, winning overall 4-3. The White Hawks have a busy tennis schedule in upcoming weeks, making up matches postponed due to inclement weather from the first few weeks of the season. Section play starts on May 18.
