After celebrating a 5-2 victory against Holy Family on Senior/Parent Night, the Mound Westonka High School girls tennis team traveled to Buffalo for a tournament on Sept. 17.
The White Hawks’ first opponent was Becker. The team came out with a 4-3 victory and a singles sweep with wins from senior Evann Welty, 6-1, 6-0; ninth-grader Alex Welty, 6-2, 6-0; senior Kristina Linder, 6-2, 6-0; and junior Molly Schoephoerster, 6-1, 6-0.
Next, the team took on the tournament host, Buffalo. The White Hawks won 5-2 with convincing wins posted by singles players Evann Welty, 6-0, 6-1; Alex Welty, 6-0, 6-1; and Linder, 6-2, 6-0; and come-from-behind victories from the doubles teams of juniors Leah Richter and Jamie Goldberg, 3-6, 6-1, 10-6; and sophomore Lauren Burris and junior Makenzie Anderson, 1-6, 6-2, 10-5.
For the final match of the tournament, the White Hawks came out on top of Waseca 6-1. The team brought home the championship trophy, and Evann Welty, Alex Welty and Linder won first-place ribbons with 3-0 records. Schoephoerster, Richter, Goldberg, Anderson and Burris won runner-up ribbons with 2-1 records.
Continuing their winning ways in the regular season, the White Hawks scored back-to-back 7-0 victories against non-conference opponent Chanhassen and conference rival New London-Spicer. The team’s record stands at 13-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Next up for the White Hawks are away matches at Litchfield on Sept. 26 and Orono on Sept. 27.
