Forty-eight members of the Mound Westonka High School White Hawks football team traveled to Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota June 18-20 for a team camp.
“I was very pleased with the number of players we had at camp this year as they continue to grow with each year that we attend this team camp,” said White Hawks head coach Nick David.
According to David, the time at Augustana University was a great opportunity to start figuring things out as a team for the upcoming season. “We started out with an aggressive attitude this year,” David said. “This was the first time since last season that most of the players have had the opportunity to play full-contact football again. The boys were really flying around on the field and having a lot of fun!”
Players were coached on individual skill sets by the coaching staff and football team members of Augustana University and were given advice on what they could do to improve.
Mound Westonka was one of the smaller schools at the team camp and, therefore, had to scrimmage some larger teams from South Dakota. The White Hawks scrimmaged Academy Force, Maple River, and Rogers from Minnesota; and Brandon Valley, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte, O’Gorman, and Tea Area from South Dakota.
“Like last summer, we were able to get things going right from the get go on offense during our first couple of scrimmages,” David said. “Throughout all of our scrimmages we played solid defense and ran the ball really well. Augustana University’s football camp was truly a great way to improve as a team!”
White Hawks players who attended the Augustana University Team Football Camp included seniors Marshall Boser, Conner Clark, Evan Dahl, Andrew Fish, TJ Hillman, Adam Hoogeveen, Bailey Ramlet, Bobby Sweet, and Jarek Witczek; juniors Austin Abrams, Ben Courtney-Bernal, Jack Dioszeghy, Thomas Elliott, Alex Farwell, Esteban Fernandez-Armstrong, Jose Gonzalez, Brandon Hokkanen, Luke Holmen, Logan Holmgren, Kris Kurtz, Dylan O’Flanagan, Luke Rogers, Zach Simmons, Shane Stevenson, and Ben Wulf; sophomores Zach Babb, Jack Bullock, Jonah Cowell, Isaiah Dempsey, Ryan Fitz, Noah Lietzau, Calvin Mackell, Charlie Nesbitt, Cameron Oates, Dillon Somnis, Nick Stanberry, and Tyler Stevenson; and freshmen Tucker Anderly, Trent Bowe, Trent Kelly, Michael Kurtz, Logan Leonard, Shawn McNatt, Owen Rostis, Perris Volk, Ethan Wagner, Devon Wilson-Noethe, and Lukas Witczek. Several team members were unable to attend due to their involvement in baseball, basketball, wrestling, and hockey; or because of work and/or other summer commitments according to Coach David.
The White Hawks football team will conclude their summer preparation for the 2017 football season by holding a five-day team camp July 24-28 from 8:00am to 10:00am each morning. Coach David hopes that all 9-12 grade athletes interested in playing football this season will attend this team camp.
