The Westonka Activities Department is proud to name Grandview Middle School seventh-grader Laura Sunnarborg and Mound Westonka High School junior Charlie Reinhardt Westonka Athletic/Activities Students of the Week for the week of Sept. 18, 2017.
Sunnarborg, a cross country rookie, has made quite an impression in her first month of competition. After missing the White Hawks’ first meet, she made her debut at Maple Lake and was the first junior high runner out of 46 to cross the finish line.
Since moving up to the varsity level, Sunnarborg has run three solid 5Ks, dropping time and places in each one. At Norwood on Sept. 12, she was a ribbon winner by virtue of placing 23rd of 105 racers. A week later, she was a medalist at the annual Grasshopper meet, checking in at sixth place with a 5K time of 21:25.
Congrats to this emerging athlete, who will next face some of the best seventh-graders in the state at the Milaca Mega Meet on Saturday, Sept. 23!
Reinhardt came up big in two races this past week. At Baylor Park near Norwood-Young America, he moved up smartly in finished in eighth place of 127 runners in a race featuring three state-ranked teams.
A week later, Reinhardt used his strength to conquer the White Hawks’ home Gale Woods course, as he cruised to the championship of the annual Grasshopper meet. “His 17:41 5K was a bit slower than the 17:19 he posted at the Lions Invitational at Baylor, but the Grasshopper course is more challenging and a tougher test,” said head coach Butch Humbert.
Reinhardt has finished in the top 10 in all five of the White Hawks’ races thus far this season and is one of the main reasons the MWHS boys varsity team is off to such a good start. Congrats, Charlie!
Congratulations, Laura and Charlie!
