Varsity Student Senate · Helland, Neve Crowned Homecoming Queen and King

An enthusiastic Mound Westonka High School student body gathered for an assembly on Monday, Oct. 2, when seniors Rose Helland and Jonny Neve were crowned the 2017 MWHS Homecoming Queen and King. Family members and friends were also in attendance.

The coronation ceremony kicked off a full week of Homecoming activities. The event, which was emceed by junior Student Senate members Asha Martel and Navin Thakurdial, included the traditional introductions of the senior members of the Royal Court, who were escorted by their parents. The event also included a slideshow featuring the members of the Royal Court. This year’s junior attendants were Hilltop Primary School first-graders Tynan Barrett, son of Jeff and Mindy Barrett, and Jojo Schwartz, daughter of Mike and Sara Schwartz.

MWHS “Mixing Spoons” Toby Robinson and Sarah Morinville, selected by the senior class for the way that they blend the students together, had the honor of crowning the new queen and king.

Queen Rose Helland is captain of the bowling team, a five-year Student Senate member and a member of National Honor Society. Her favorite class has been literature with Corey Bulman, who makes his class interesting with humor and sarcasm. She most admires her father, because of his work ethic and humor. Rose is the daughter of Bryan and Stephanie Helland.

King Jonny Neve is captain of the boys soccer team and a member of the football and tennis teams. He enjoys his computer science class and is looking forward to going to state with the soccer team. He looks up to junior Charlie Reinhardt because of his no-quit, non-stop attitude. Jonny is the son of David and Jesse Neve.

Mackenzie Anderson plays tennis and basketball and is Officer of Public Relations for Student Senate. Her favorite class has been CIS Spanish. She is looking forward to making memories with both old and new friends in her senior year. Mackenzie, who admires her grandparents for their adventurous spirits, is the daughter of Sheryl and Greg Anderson.

Zephaniah Johnson really likes the casual, fun atmosphere of his game programming classes. He also enjoys world history with Alan “Pharaoh” Hiebert. Zeph is the son of Kimberly and Brian Johnson.

Sarah Byington is a member of DECA and the Rotary Club. She is also on the girls golf team. She most admires her dad for inspiring her to be anything she wants to be and to never doubt herself. Sarah is the daughter of Jason and Darcy Byington.

Brady Aufderheide plays hockey and enjoys hanging out with the boys and going on church trips. He greatly admires his Grandma Omi for her support, patience and unconditional love. He is looking forward to the upcoming hockey season. Brady is the son of Jason and Carmen Aufderheide.

Julia Elling is involved with girls soccer and the track and field team. She volunteers at Hennepin County Medical Center and is a member of NHS, Link Crew and the Harbor Group. She most admires her aunt, who is one of the happiest people she knows despite a multiple sclerosis diagnosis which has put her into a wheelchair. Julia is the daughter of Shaun and Arnie Elling.

Jack LaTour is a member of DECA and plays on the baseball and hockey teams. His favorite class has been calculus. He is looking forward to his senior year and seeing what his future holds. He most admires his dad for his work ethic and positive impact on others. Jack is the son of Anne and Bill LaTour.

Megan Heins is vice president of Student Senate. She is a member of NHS and plays ultimate frisbee. She really enjoys her engineering classes with Dale Kimball. Megan, the daughter of Kathy and Jason Heins, looks up to her mom, who has inspired her to be a better person by staying true to herself.

Austin Hargreaves is a DECA officer and a five-year member of Student Senate. He also plays hockey and golf. He enjoys his marketing class with Toby Robinson. He really admires his dad because he is successful and works hard for his family. Austin is the son of Patia and Darin Hargreaves.

Katelyn Wagner plays hockey, lacrosse and tennis. She is also a DECA officer. She really admires her older sister Sydney for being a marvelous role model. She is looking forward to creating many memories in her senior year. Katelyn is the daughter of Libby and Michael Wagner.

Reed Kohls is a two-year vice president of the Rotary Club, a two-year officer of NHS and a two-year officer of Student Senate, currently the secretary. He runs cross country and plays tennis. He loves his AP literature class and is looking forward to laughing as much as possible with people he cares about during his senior year. He admires his mother for always being optimistic. Reed is the son of Mona and Scott Kohls.

Abigail Wharram is captain of the cross country team and a member of the basketball and track teams. She is an officer in DECA and a member of Link Crew, Harbor Group and NHS. She really admires her brother Parker and his wife, Mack, for their ability to live their lives to the fullest. Abby is the daughter of Dom and Linda Wharram.

Michael Uhas is captain of the golf team and involved in both NHS and DECA. He is looking forward to the state DECA competition, the prom and his senior golf season this year. Michael is the son of Chris and Erin Uhas.

Following the coronation, the Student Senate thanked family members and friends for their support. Congratulations to Queen Rose and King Jonny, along with the rest of the members of the Royal Court, who will preside over the 2017 Homecoming activities.
