The Mound Westonka cross country team competed in the Thundering Royal Elk Invitational meet on Oct. 5 at Fox Hollow Golf Course in St. Michael. This meet was one of the tougher races on the White Hawks’ schedule. Many of the schools competing were large schools not in the White Hawks’ conference or section.
The varsity boys team finished mid-pack in ninth place out of 17 teams. Junior Charlie Reinhardt just missed the top 10 with an 11th-place finish in the 5km race with a time of 17:14.
The varsity girls team finished in 10th place overall. Leading the White Hawks ladies was seventh-grader Laura Sunnarborg, who had another personal best time this season of 20:27, finishing in 16th place. Senior Clara Godoy-Henderson also had a solid race, finishing with a time of 21:47.
In the junior varsity division, the boys team finished in third place. Freshman Charlie Herder was the top White Hawks finisher, clocking in at 19:41 for 20th place out of 199 runners. The junior varsity girls did not field a full team, but seventh-grader Jordyn LaRue finished in seventh place with a time of 23:08.
The White Hawks middle school boys team had two runners in the top 10. Eighth-graders Owen Paul and Drew Hunter had times of 9:03 and 9:22, taking second and seventh place, respectively. On Oct. 4 during Homecoming Week, the cross country team visited Shirley Hills Primary School for lunch recess. The MWHS team ran the youngsters through five drill stations to warm up and then facilitated a fun running race for each of the five grade levels, kindergarten through fourth grade. The race had a gun start, a cross country-type course, a finish chute and a clock. The participants each received an autographed certificate from the team.
Next up for the White Hawks is the Wright County Conference Championship Meet on Oct. 17 at Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista, followed by the Section 2AA Championship meet on Oct. 26 also at Gale Woods Farm. The White Hawks look forward to racing on their home course for the two final meets of the year. Racers who qualify for the MSHSL State Cross Country Meet will compete Nov. 4 at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.
