The Mound Westonka High School Nordic ski team competed in a conference classic 4km race on Jan. 4 at Hyland Lake Park Reserve in Bloomington. The team was coming off a training trip to Maplelag Resort in Callaway, Minnesota, where several of the team members skied over 100km in two and a half days. Despite the heavy training hours, both the boys and girls White Hawks teams finished mid-pack among the conference teams.
The boys team finished third of six teams, and the girls finished fourth of seven teams. Individually, leading the White Hawks ladies was sophomore Kate McGown with a 21st-place finish. Junior Charlie Reinhardt led the boys team with a third-place finish.
Following this conference race, the team traveled north to Biwabik, Minnesota to race at the Mesabi East Invitational Meet at Giant’s Ridge on Jan. 6. Each year this race is the largest high school Nordic ski race in the United States with over 950 skiers from over 50 teams participating.
The White Hawks boys team finished in 17th place out of 51 teams. Reinhardt finished in seventh place overall in the 5km classic race with a time of 16:04. The top White Hawks skier in the boys 5km freestyle race was junior Andrew Abegglen, who took 35th place out of 145 skiers. The top White Hawk skiers on the girls side were senior Calli Battis in the classic race with a 5km time of 24:44 and junior Lauren Lachenmayer in the freestyle race with a time of 23:43.
January continues to be a busy month for the Nordic ski team with races scheduled every week in January leading up to the conference championship meet on Jan. 26 at Baker Park in Orono.
