The Westonka White Hawks boys hockey team started off 2018 the right way by winning three out of three games. Proving this sweep was a total team effort, eight different players scored goals and eight different players recorded assists during the week.

On Jan. 2, the White Hawks defeated the Lions of Providence Academy by a score of 3-2, but that game was not as close as the score indicated. The Lions tried to use their size to outmuscle the White Hawks, but the White Hawks were having none of it. At the end of the game, the White Hawks dominated in shots on goal, in offensive zone time and in fewer penalty minutes.

Game Highlights vs. Providence Academy:

  • White Hawks goals by seniors Jack LaTour, Torsten Lee and Hank Nagel
  • White Hawks outshot the Lions 40-27

Winding out the week, the White Hawks faced the Tigers from Hutchinson on Jan. 5. The White Hawks rose to the challenge and delivered a 3-1 win.

Game Highlights vs. Hutchinson:

  • White Hawks goals by junior Britt Courneya and seniors Aleksi Partio and Trey Courneya

Special Weekly Highlight
The White Hawks can add another honor to an already spectacular season that boasts a record of 11-2-1. This past week, the entire White Hawks boys hockey team was awarded the Athletic Students of the Week recognition by the Westonka Activities Department. This is only the second time this award has been given to an entire team. This award is very special to the players and coaching staff, who take great pride in representing their school and community in a first-class manner.

Coaches Corner with Jake Hindermann
Every season presents its challenges. This week was the back end of a two-week stretch where we played six games in nine days. It took everything we had to survive, as attrition was our secondary opponent all week. This past week pitted us against quality opponents in Providence Academy (section game), Minnehaha Academy and Hutchinson (a tough physical opponent and conference rival). It’s really amazing to win five of six in nine days and outscore our opponents 29-11, but to me the greater significance of what we did during this stretch was the knowledge we gained about ourselves. We are a team that loves to compete and will do so regardless of what the obstacles before us may do to distract us and oftentimes keep our eyes off the path to achieving our goals.
