The Mound Westonka boys basketball team tried to gain some momentum for upcoming postseason play as the White Hawks played a pair of games against conference opponents last week.
The White Hawks started the week with a home game against the Glencoe-Silver Lake Panthers on Feb. 20. The White Hawks took an early lead and maintained a 7-point margin at halftime. The lead was increased to 9 early in the second half before the Panthers began their slow climb back to tie the White Hawks late in the second half. Glencoe-Silver Lake went on to win 54-51 with 3-point buzzer beater.
Sophomore Isaiah Dempsey led the White Hawks in scoring and rebounding with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Other White Hawks contributors included: ninth-grader Santi Phommahaxay (9 points); senior Marshall Boser (8 points); senior Evan Dahl (6 points); senior Jack Kraay and sophomore Calvin MacKell (5 points each); and sophomore Jameson Sexton and junior Nico Phommahaxay (4 points, 3 assists each).
On Feb. 23, the White Hawks attempted to play spoiler as they traveled to Annandale to play the Cardinals on their Senior Night. But a large home crowd and the emotion of several seniors playing in their final season carried the Cardinals to a decisive 52-23 victory over the White Hawks. White Hawks scoring leaders: Sexton (5 points); Boser and senior Julius Orenge (4 points each); Dahl (3 points); Kraay, Santi Phommahaxay and junior Thomas Miller (2 points each); and Dempsey (1 point).
The White Hawks finish their regular season schedule at home for Senior Night on Friday, March 2, against Watertown-Mayer.
