The Westonka Activities Department is proud to name Mound Westonka High School senior Piper Bruce Athletic/Activities Student of the Week for the week of March 19, 2018.
Over her time in the MWHS Theatre Department, Bruce earned three Outstanding Performance awards from Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Spotlight Musical Theatre Program:
- Fall 2015 – Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role for her performance as Crystal in “Little Shop of Horrors”
- Fall 2016 – Outstanding Performance in a Leading Role for her performance as Mabel in “The Pirates of Penzance”
- Fall 2017 – Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role for her performance as Nickie in “Sweet Charity”
“We are excited to recognize Piper for her outstanding work in MWHS theatre over the past five years,” said assistant theatre director Meagan Lenz. “In my time here over the past 10 years, there have been only two other students that have participated in every musical and play from eighth grade through their senior year, and I am so glad Piper is one of those students! We can’t wait to see where her future brings her!”
The 2018 MWHS spring play, “Egad, the Woman in White,” was Bruce’s 10th production with MWHS Theatre. She was previously part of the casts of “Copacabana,” “The Odd Couple,” “Band Geeks,” “Emergency Prom,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Night Watch,” “Pirates of Penzance,” “The Diviners,” “Sweet Charity.”
Bruce’s favorite show was “Little Shop of Horrors” because of all the exciting dances and the giant plant puppet, of course. Her favorite role was Mabel in “Pirates of Penzance” because she got to sing in her higher range, and she became incredibly close to her fellow cast members from learning all the music together. Her advice to underclassmen would be, “Don’t forget that the reason we act is to bring other people joy. Your goal should be to make at least one person in the audience’s day better.” Bruce plans to attend an out-of-state college to gain a BFA in musical theater.
