Lee and Nelson Headed to State

After a successful team season and placing second in section 2A team play, six players from the Mound Westonka Varsity tennis team went on to to compete in 2A individual sections. Representing the White Hawk were seniors Torsten Lee and Victor Nelson, seeded #1 in doubles; seniors Adam Hoogeveen and Jonny Neve, seeded #10 in double; senior Reed Kohls, seeded #7 in singles; and freshman Jack Linder, seeded #5 in singles. Lee and Nelson and Linder, received byes the first round. Kohls posted a first round win of 6-1, 6-1 over the #10 seed from Providence Academy. Hoogeveen and Neve also posted a win against #6 seeded doubles team from Providence, winning in an exciting tie break third set, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(5). Moving into the second round, Kohls faced the #2 seed from Breck and lost 1-6, 0-6. Hoogeveen and Neve played #2 seed from Holy Family and lost 0-6, 1-6. Linder played his first match against the #4 seed from Breck and pulled off a threei set win, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Lee and Nelson faced #8 seed from St. Peter and won 6-2, 6-0. Second round winners moved on to a second day of play. Linder had the tough task of a semi final match against #1 seed from St. Peter and lost 0-6, 0-6. He then played a third place match against #2 seed Breck and lost 1-6, 1-6. Lee and Nelson played their semi final match against the #5 seed from Holy Family and came away with a 6-1, 6-3 win. They moved on the the Championship match where they played #2 seed from Holy Family. It was closely fought but the boys pulled off a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win and are headed to the State Tournament on June 7 and 8 at Reed Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis. In addition to competing in individual sections, Lee, Neve, Nelson and Linder received All Conference Honors and Kohls received All Conference Honorable Mention for their successful seasons.
