Westonka softball makes it to Section Finals

Mound Westonka varsity softball marched on in the section playoffs on Tuesday 5/29 with a loss to Benilde St. Margaret (BSM) 9-3. A rain out prevented the game from finishing and when play resumed on Wednesday no runs were scored in the final 2 and a half innings played. Junior Ellie Skogsberg, had all 3RBIs. Junior Maddy White took the loss from the pitching circle. Sophomore catcher Maddie Steahl led with 3 hits.

The loss to BSM put Westonka in the loser’s bracket for the first time in the playoffs. They faced Orono for the second time in sections winning 4-3 in an extra inning. White went all 8 innings for the win from the circle. Sophomores Steahl and third base player Chloe Kantola led with two hits each. The White Hawks played well as a team with no errors. Senior co-captain left fielder Becca Dvoracek led with 2 RBI’s. The White Hawks jumped ahead 3-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning when Orono scored 3 runs and had bases loaded with one out. Senior Sam Eidsness, playing second base made a great catch on a line drive and turned the double play to get out of the inning. Westonka scored again in the top of the 8th and held on for the win.

The victory placed Westonka in the final facing BSM. As a double elimination tournament, the White Hawks needed to beat BSM twice to take the title and advance to state. An exciting first game victory 4-2, gave Westonka with momentum heading into the second game of the double header. White pitched the whole game for the win. BSM jumped out 2-0 in the first inning. Westonka scored 3 in the top of 3 to go up 3-2. In the top of the 7th inning, the White Hawks added an insurance run to go up 4-2. In the bottom of the inning, BSM had bases loaded and no outs when they grounded to White. She threw to home and Steahl threw to first for the double play which ended the threat and they held them scoreless.
Dvoracek and Skogsberg had 2 hits each and as a team the White Hawks again had no errors defensively.

In a disappointing final game, catcher Steahl sustained a serious cleating injury and concussion, taking her out of the game and the team could not get back on track after the emotional injury. It was an exhausting 20-1 loss after a tournament of exceptional play and teamwork. They took the second place title and trophy in the Section 6AAA tourney. The team will celebrate their accomplishments at a banquet June 11th.
