Mound’s Lee and Nelson Participate at State in Tennis
Torsten Lee and Victor Nelson participated in the Single A Tennis State Tournament last week. The senior captains went into the tournament as the #4 seed.
Their first match was against Carter Anderson and Ryan Osborne from Hibbing. The match was competitive as both teams played hard, but in the end, Lee and Nelson prevailed 6-4, 6-3.
With the victory, they advanced to the quarter finals where they faced the #5 seed from Thief River Falls, Carter Onkka and Cole Gillespie. This match was a great example of what high school sports should be with fantastic shots, some mistakes, great hustle and true sportsmanship shown by both teams.
After an exhausting 2 1/2 hour match, which included two tie break sets, Lee and Nelson fell to the team from Thief River Falls 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 3-6. The boys played their hearts out and left everything on the court, but on this day it wasn’t enough.
Lee and Nelson both were 5 year letter winners in tennis during their high school career and were thrilled to have made it back to the state tournament.
