The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling squad had a busy week, competing in their first Wright County conference action of the year and in the Northfield Invite.
On Dec. 13, the White Hawks traveled to New London-Spicer to take on the host Wildcats and Litchfield. The White Hawks fell to the Wildcats 43-42 in the first dual, losing by criteria when the dual was tied after the heavyweight match.
“We got pinned in a few matches, and that made the difference,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger.
In the second dual, the White Hawks notched five wins against a solid Litchfield team, but they fell short by a score of 48-25. Earning two wins on the evening for the White Hawks were seniors Felipe Mahmoud and Ben Schmalz.
The White Hawks traveled to Northfield on Dec. 15 for the Northfield Invite and placed 13th in a strong 16-team field. “We wanted a tough tournament before break, and this was a good one for us,” said Munsterteiger. “All of our kids got great matches that will help us in the long run.”
All 11 wrestlers who competed won at least one match, and Schmalz cruised to the 182-pound championship with an 11-3 win in the finals. Sophomore Lance Munsterteiger was the JV champion at 160 pounds with three pins and a technical fall in the finals.
The White Hawks will travel to Robbinsdale Armstrong to compete in a quad with the host Falcons as well as Tartan and Roseville. Start time is 5 p.m.
