The Mound Westonka boys and girls Nordic ski teams had a conference classic ski race at Hyland Lake Park Reserve in Bloomington on Dec. 11. Classic cross-country ski technique is the traditional striding motion, moving the skis back and forth in a running or walking motion.
The White Hawk varsity girls were able to field a complete team this week and finished fifth out of seven teams. Individually, junior Kate McGown was the top finishing White Hawk, coming in 16th place overall with a time of 17:54 for the 5km race.
On the boys side, the White Hawks finished in second place in the team competition being bested again by the strong St. Paul Highland Park team. Individually, senior Charlie Reinhardt came in first place with a time of 12:43 for the 5km race. The boys varsity team had strong performances all around, notably senior Joe Woychick (14th – 14:51) had one of the best races of his career.
It was the first race of the season for the White Hawk junior varsity skiers. JV skiers raced several different race distances ranging from 1.8km to 5km depending on ability and experience. The JV team will continue to improve each week with more time on snow. Next up for the White Hawks is a conference race on Jan. 3 at Wirth Park, followed by the Mesabi Invite on Jan. 5 at Giants Ridge Resort in Biwabik, Minnesota.
