The Mound Westonka Nordic ski team had a busy start to racing in 2019, starting with a classic ski race at Wirth Park in Minneapolis on Jan. 3 against teams in the Twin City Nordic Ski Conference. The White Hawks boys team came in second place once again to an always strong St. Paul Highland Park team. Senior Charlie Reinhardt took the win in the varsity boys division with a time of 11:59 for the 4.3km race. Also placing well was senior Andrew Abegglen, who took third place overall with a time of 12:42.
The White Hawks ladies came in sixth place overall as a team. Junior Kate McGown was top finisher for the White Hawks, coming in 19th place with a time of 17:09.
On Jan. 5, the White Hawks went north to compete in the Mesabi East Invitational at Giants Ridge Resort in Biwabik, Minnesota. Over 875 skiers participated in several divisions, making this the largest high school Nordic ski race in the nation. Team scores are sum of the top two classic and freestyle times.
The White Hawks boys came in 19th place out of 53 teams. Individually, Charlie Reinhardt came in second place in the freestyle division with a time of 14:32 for the 5km race. This is the highest place finish by any MWHS Nordic skier in this race ever. In the classic division, senior Andrew Abegglen was the top White Hawk, coming in 27th place with a time of 16:55.
The White Hawks girls team came in 41st place at Mesabi. Top classic skier for the White Hawks ladies was junior Kate McGown in 74th place with a time of 23:02. Senior Lauren Lachenmayer was the top freestyle skier for MWHS, coming in 98th place with a time of 22:01.
Next up for the White Hawks is a training trip to Maplelag Nordic Ski Center in Callaway, Minnesota, the weekend of Jan. 11, followed by the Rennet Race at Hyland Lake Park Reserve on Jan 18.
