Westonka Speech competed at the Wright County Conference meet Feb. 28. With a total of 93 sweepstake points, Westonka placed second in the conference, the highest placement in recent years, and will advance to sections.
Two Westonka Speech competitors were the champions in their categories: eighth-grader Grace Cunningham in Discussion and junior Merrick Gormley in Poetry. Second-place finishes went to juniors Adam Born and Conner Jones for duo, junior Anders Erdahl for Discussion, and sophomore Josh Nkhata for Creative Expression.
Four students placed third in their categories: eighth-grader Ilana Andrev for Extemporaneous Speaking, sophomore Maya Jable for Original Oratory, senior Taylor Hummelsund for Poetry Reading, and juniors Grace Hanson and Trinity Bielke for Duo.
Additionally, sophomore Annika Wulf and senior Lauren Martin placed fourth in their categories, junior Gage Olson and sophomore Hank McCue placed fifth overall in the conference for their categories, and junior Hampton Velarde placed sixth overall in Discussion.
“This was a great showing of our team’s talent and we can’t wait to see how sections go,” said coach Kelsey Rausch.
