After more rainy weather and another match postponement, the Mound Westonka High School boys tennis team got back on the courts May 2 to take on conference rival Holy Family and to host their annual Senior Night and Parent Picnic. The weather was cool, but the sun came out and the boys came away with a 7-0 victory to bring their conference record to 3-1.
For the team’s next challenge, section rival Breck paid a visit to the Westonka courts on May 6. It was expected a be tough matchup, and the Mustangs did not disappoint. At doubles the White Hawks took control with three wins by seniors Thomas Elliott and Andrew Abegglen, first doubles, 6-3, 6-2; seniors Cole Luehmann and Tyler Franzen, second doubles, 6-3, 6-1; and sophomores Nolan Hanson and Harry Moen, third doubles, 6-0, 6-1.
The White Hawks needed one of their singles players to pull through with a win. It could not have been closer. Two of the matches went to a third set, and one ended in two but with both sets going to seven games. In the end, seventh-grader Carter Reinbold pulled out a three-set win at fourth singles 6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-4 to seal the 4-3 victory.
The White Hawks are now 7-2 overall and are sitting in first place in Section 2A. The team will wrap up regular season play next week. JV will also wrap up its season and is currently 9-0 overall.
