The Mound Westonka High School baseball team won its final game of the regular season on May 23 with a 12-4 victory over North Branch. It was also Senior Day, and eight White Hawks players and their parents were honored after the game. The game was played at the WRA Park in Minnetrista due to poor field conditions at the high school.
The wet spring has wreaked havoc on fields and scheduling, as last Tuesday’s game at Siebert Field vs. Litchfield had to be called after three innings because of rain. That game was 0-0 with several outstanding defensive plays by White Hawks fielders. Junior Charlie Nesbit’s diving catch in foul territory was one of the best plays observed by coaches in a long, long time. Last Wednesday’s game vs. Cooper was also rained out.
In the North Branch game, the White Hawks struck first. Senior Cole Kahmeyer singled to lead off the game. He advanced to second base on a single by sophomore Trent Bowe and advanced to third on a fly ball. Kahmeyer scored on senior Alex Farwell’s sacrifice fly.
But errors would put the home team behind 4-1 in the top of the second inning. All four runs off of Bowe were unearned and caused the sophomore to throw over 30 pitches in the inning. The White Hawks tied the game in the bottom half of the inning thanks to an RBI single by Bowe and a couple of Vikings errors. Two more runs were scored by the home team in the bottom of the third inning on RBI singles by junior Calvin Mackell and senior Shane Stevenson. Mackell went 4-for-4 on the day with four RBIs, and Stevenson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
The big inning for the White Hawks was the bottom of the sixth, when they scored four runs. Kahmeyer again led off with a single. With two outs, Farwell walked. Junior Cam Baklund hit an RBI single. Junior Tyler Stevenson drew a 3-2 walk to load the bases. Mackell singled home two runs and Stevenson singled in another. Senior Ethan James relieved Bowe in the sixth inning and threw two innings of hitless relief.
The White Hawks enter section play with a 7-11 record. They face Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the first round on Tuesday, May 28, and Orono or Dassel-Cokato in round two on Thursday, May 30.
