Brian Ibs and Patrick Regan have accepted positions as co-head coaches for the Mound Westonka High School varsity baseball team. They will replace coach Bob Kuehl, who led the White Hawks since 2014, which included a Wright County Conference Championship win in 2018.
Coach Ibs is a 2001 graduate of Monticello High School in Monticello, Minnesota. While there, Ibs participated in football, basketball and baseball at the varsity level. After high school, Ibs went on to earn his B.S. in social studies education from the University of Northwestern, St. Paul. Ibs has since earned his master’s in social studies curriculum and instruction from the University of South Florida.
This will be Ibs’ 15th year coaching and his fifth year at Mound Westonka High School. His first two years of coaching were with Blaine High School’s JV baseball team. After coaching in Blaine, Ibs moved to Florida, where he coached the Keswick Christian varsity baseball team from 2007 to 2014. He has since coached Westonka’s seventh-grade and C-squad teams. Along with his coaching duties, Ibs will be in his fifth year as seventh grade social studies teacher at Grandview Middle School. Coach Ibs, his wife, Sara, their daughter, Elin, and their son, Lincoln, live within the Westonka community.
Coach Regan is a 2011 graduate of Mound Westonka High School. He attended Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota (graduated 2015), where he earned a B.S. in accounting and M.S. in accounting (graduated 2017). Coach Regan recently passed the CPA exam, and is currently serving as business support coordinator for Westonka Public Schools.
Regan was a four-year varsity player at MWHS and was a captain in his senior year. He then played college baseball at Saint Mary’s, where he was a pitcher for the team and again a senior captain. Coach Regan has coached youth teams in the Westonka Youth Baseball League, VFW, Jr. Legion, and Legion for Mound Westonka. He also was on the high school staff this past Spring.
Regan made the following statement:
“I am humbled, grateful and excited to be named co-head coach for the Mound Westonka High School baseball program. I am thrilled to be leading the program with Coach Brian Ibs. As a graduate of Mound Westonka, I have tremendous pride in the program. To be able to give back to the school where my baseball career started is something really special to me. Through player development that focuses on efficient, high quality practice, Coach Ibs and I will work tirelessly to bring this program to a level of competitive excellence that yields consistent results. I will serve as a mentor for the student-athletes, with the goal of developing high quality young men who live out our program standards on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Thank you to everyone for supporting our vision for the White Hawks baseball program. We are excited to get started!”
This summer, the Mound Westonka White Hawks had 28 athletes participate in the summer baseball program, playing in the Crow River 15/16 league, the V.F.W. level (sponsored by Waconia Post 5462) and the Jr. Legion level. The boys had a combined record of 21-22-2. The V.F.W. team won the North Sub District, beating Sibley East, the defending V.F.W. state champs, Chaska and Shakopee in a thriller, 18-17. They advanced to district play in St. James, Minnesota, where they beat St. James but ended up losing to Chaska and Shakopee to end their season. The work the boys put in this past summer is a great foundation to build on into the spring of 2020. Go White Hawks!
