The Mound Westonka High School girls tennis team is over half way through the 2019 season.
The White Hawks traveled to the Holy Family tennis courts on Sept. 10 and blew out the Fire with a 6-1 victory. Freshman Kate Velander, second singles; seventh-grader Savannah Paul, fourth singles; and the first doubles team of senior captain Lily Hames and senior Grace Prchal all won their tie-breaker sets for the win. The JV team also came home with an undefeated win, 7-0.
The White Hawks hosted Delano on Sept. 11 for Parents/Senior Night, recognizing 12 seniors across the varsity, JV and JV-B teams with a special dinner for all team members, their parents and the opposing team. The celebratory evening unfortunately ended with a 3-4 loss for Westonka.
Winning their matches were: senior captain Alex Welty, first singles, 6-1, 6-0; Velander, second singles, 6-2, 6-4; and Paul, fourth singles, 5-7, 6-3 (12-10) in a competitive tie-breaker. The third doubles team of senior Claire Russick and sophomore Coco Sir, 3-6, 6-4 (8-10), also ended their match in a tie-breaker but could not clinch the overall match win.
After the loss to the always strong Delano tennis program, coach Rob Paul commented, “That is the closest we have come to beating Delano in years!” The JV-B team lost their matches 2-6 but played them the following week on Sept. 17 and tied 4-4.
Sept. 12 brought Litchfield to town and the third consecutive match for the week at the Westonka tennis courts. The Dragons made their roar heard with a 6-1 win over the White Hawks. Welty, again at first singles, had a close tie-breaking match, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, as the only win for the team. The JV team also lost 3-4.
The girls started a new week of tennis match play, traveling to Chanhassen on Sept. 16. The White Hawks dominated the Storm with a 6-1 win. The third doubles team of sophomores Meagan Mattson and Ellerie Anderson, 6-2, 6-7 (5), (10-4), finalized the score with a tie-breaking win. The JV team also pulled ahead with a 4-3 win. The JV-B team tied their matches 9-9.
On the road again, the team traveled to New London-Spicer on Sept. 17 and came home with a 5-2 conference win. The winning White Hawks included Welty, first singles, 6-2, 6-3; freshman Sara Funderburk, third singles, 6-1, 6-3; Paul, fourth singles, 6-0, 6-3; second doubles, junior captain Grace Peterson and Russick, 6-3, 6-1; and third doubles, Mattson and Anderson, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 with another tie-breaking win. The JV team lost 2-5.
The Westonka girls played their last regular season home match against Annandale on Sept. 19 with another conference win 4-3. Welty, first singles, 6-0, 6-0 dominated her match. Velander, second singles, 6-0, 6-4; Paul, third singles, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), second doubles team, Peterson and Russick, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) all played solid matches. The JV team won 6-1.
Unfortunately, the Buffalo Tournament on Sept. 21 for the 12 varsity players was canceled 30
minutes into match play due the inclement weather. The girls have a conference tournament scheduled
for Sept. 26 at Annandale, and team sections will begin the first week of October.
