The White Hawks cross country team traveled to Collinwood Park last Tuesday to run in the Dassel-Cokato Invitational.
In the boys varsity race, Mound Westonka High School junior Gregoir Laboulet led the White Hawks with a seventh-place finish in 17:47.20. Sophomores Lance Nemecek and Beckett James both finished in the Top 20, as Nemecek finished 13th (18:15.90) and James finished 19th (18:40.60). Junior Charlie Herder (33rd, 19:26.30) and sophomore Josh Engesser (35th, 19:36.60) rounded out the scoring for Westonka. The varsity boys finished fifth with just eight points separating third and fifth places.
Senior Kate McGown led the way for the White Hawks girls varsity squad. McGown finished 12th in 21:55.70. Sophomore Allison Soule finished closely behind her teammate, crossing the finish line in 14th in 22:05.00. Freshman Emily Wendorf and seventh-grader Brooke Garlock also had close finishes, as Wendorf finished 26th (22:50.20) and Garlock finished 27th (23:09.20). Junior Jenna Brustad wrapped up the scoring for Westonka with a 36th-place finish in 23:51.90. The varsity girls finished sixth in the competition.
The Westonka junior varsity boys had four Top-20 finishers in its race. Junior Michael Kurtz led the way with a fifth-place finish in 19:36.90. Juniors Roman Fenzl (11th, 20:12.20) and Derek Lloyd (13th, 20:34.50), sophomore Max Epsky (14th, 20:37.60) and senior Robby Brustad (16th, 20:38.80) all earned spots in the Top 20. These finishes led the JV boys to a second-place finish.
In the middle school boys race, Westonka had six runners in the Top 20. Eighth-graders Jack Markstrom and Miles Dumbauld were neck-and-neck, as Markstrom edged out Dumbauld by just one tenth of a second. Markstrom finished fifth (12.29.70) and Dumbauld finished sixth (12:29.80). Three other Westonka runners finished in consecutive order, as eighth-grader Lucas Markstrom finished 11th (13:14.10), eighth-grader Charlie Paul finished 12th (13:14.90) and seventh-grader Eric Wendorf finished 13th (13:18.10). Eighth-grader Matthew Von Edeskuty also finished in the Top 20 with an 18th-place finish in 13:48.80. The middle school boys team finished second in the meet.
The middle school girls also had a number of runners finish in the Top 20, as their top five runners were separated by less than a minute. Seventh-grader Gabby Callahan led the way for the White Hawks with a sixth-place finish in 15:05.40. The next four finishers for the White Hawks were all next to each other. Eighth-grader Stella Johnson was ninth (15:17.10), seventh-grader Sara Sipprel was 10th (15:22.80), seventh-grader Claire Rashleger was 11th (15:57.20) and seventh-grader Sylvie Hooker-reese was 12th (15:59.80). The middle school girls finished second.
The White Hawks runners will race again on Thursday, Oct. 3, at Fox Hollow Golf Course for the Thundering Royal Elk Invitational.
