The Mound Westonka/Watertown-Mayer/Southwest Christian girls hockey team has advanced to the Section Championship game for the second year in a row. The White Hawks defeated Delano 6-0 Feb. 8 to advance.
Ninth-grader Gretta Pioske started the scoring off at 8:17 of the first period, when she picked up a loose puck near center ice, took it into the offensive zone and fired a shot just under the cross bar. It would be the only goal of the period, as the White Hawks had the edge in shots on goal 10-5.
Gretta Pioske would also score the second goal of the game when she converted a rebound of ninth-grader Emily Wendorf’s shot into a wraparound goal. The goal came just 1:21 into the period and fired up the home crowd. About 8 minutes later, junior Grace Peterson’s shot on the power player went under the arm of the goalie, and the White Hawks were up 3-0. Junior Brooke Pioske and ninth-grader Sydney Leonard assisted on the goal. At the intermission shots were 25-13.
While the girls were confident between periods, they knew that another goal would take any comeback chance away from the Tigers. Junior Jenna Brustad gave them that 2:15 into the third period on a rebound off of a shot by eighth-grader Greer Hardacre. Grace Peterson added a goal just 16 seconds later, and the celebration was on. Peterson added her third goal, earning the hat trick, when she stole the puck and rushed down on a breakaway and putting an outstanding move on the goalie for the shorthanded goal.
The White Hawks would take back-to-back penalties, allowing the Tigers to get a number of shots on goal, but junior goalie Callie Nelson was up to the task and preserved her 27-save shutout. A lot of heroes for the White Hawks as they move on to the Section 2A Finals on Thursday, Feb. 13. They play Hutchinson at 7:30 p.m. at Gustavus Adolphus College.
